FLIFF OPENING NIGHT FILM & GALA

Edward Country of Origin: USA
Year: 2010
Language: English
Genre: Comedy
Interest: American Indie
Running Time: 89 min
Format: HDCAM
Director: Edward Burns
Producer(s): Edward Burns, Aaron Lubin, William Rexer
Writer(s): Edward Burns
Cinematographer: William Rexer
Editor: Janet Gaynor
Cast: Matt Bush, Kerry Bishe, Edward Burns, Anna Wood, Max Baker

Burns (THE BROTHERS MCMULLEN, SHE’S THE ONE) crafted his most comical film to date with the sweet, often surprising charmer, NICE GUY JOHNNY.

Johnny, a sports-talk jock on a small west coast AM radio station is devoted to his fiancĂ©’ Claire. She calls all the shots, including convincing Johnny that his gig blabbing to rabid listeners is a dead end road with no security, future and all the things she wants in life –and she sure he wants too – even if he’s not so sure himself. Claire has arranged for Johnny to fly back to NY, where they both have their roots, and meet with her Dad. Dad in return will arrange an interview with a local manufacturer who has an opening for a bright, young, energetic executive-in-training.

With pangs of hesitancy, Johnny flies off solo to The Big Apple repeating a silent mantra that this is all for the best. In NY he is picked up by his Uncle Terry (Burns), a lovable rogue/screw-up/womanizer who has lots of plans for Johnny to cram into his very brief trip. Johnny did not sign on for any of this, but is conscripted into Uncle Terry’s evolving weekend, which eventually leads to the alluring Brooke.

With a dead-on zingers and complications,
NICE GUY JOHNNY is a laugh-a-minute blast where Burns’ clever script is supported beautifully by his totally believable cast. Johnny played by Matt Bush (ADVENTURELAND) is the helpless ping pong ball paddled back ‘n forth between Claire, Terry, Claire’s Dad and Johnny’s own hesitation. Kerry Bishe (SCRUBS) is the sweet, sexy, disarming Brooke – set comfortably on the summer sands of The Hamptons. Burns’ Uncle Terry is hysterical – landing feet down in embarrassing situations and delivering his implausible lines brilliantly, as if he thought them up himself…wait a minute…

This Week at Cinema Paradiso

Leonard Cohen: SONGS FROM THE ROAD

“When legend Cohen takes to the stage, it’s no less than a cultural event of Biblical dimensions.”- The Independent

In 2008, following the celebration of his 40th year as a Columbia recording artist and coinciding with his induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Leonard Cohen thrilled his fans by announcing his first tour dates in 15 years. Cohen went on to play the most prestigious and beautiful venues in virtually every corner of the globe, mesmerizing and charming audiences with performances that were hailed as some of the best of his career.

SONGS FROM THE ROAD, a dozen of Cohen’s most famous songs from that world tour, can now be seen at Cinema Paradiso. Treat yourself to the best of Cohen’s performances at auditoriums, arenas, and stadiums from Tel Aviv to London to the California desert, all filmed in stunning high-definition.

The Girl Who Played with Fire

In the highly anticipated second installment of the Millennium Trilogy…
Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. A researcher and a Millennium journalist about to expose the truth about the sex trade in Sweden are brutally murdered, and Salander’s prints are on the weapon. Her history of unpredictable and vengeful behavior makes her an official danger to society – but no-one can find her anywhere.

"Relentless suspense! Holds you in a viselike grip. Noomi Rapace is spectacular." – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate.

“A mind-bending and mesmerizing thriller that takes its time unlocking one mystery only to uncover another, all to chilling and immensely satisfying effect.” –Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
